PGP Corporation Expands Encryption Solutions with Cross-Platform Support

PGP Corporation has significantly enhanced its encryption portfolio with updates for both desktop and server products. The company recently introduced Linux compatibility to its desktop security software, marking an important milestone for cross-platform encryption solutions.

The latest PGP Desktop 10.0 release now embraces a broader operating system ecosystem, including Windows 7, macOS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, Ubuntu Linux, and Red Hat Linux. This expansion complements existing support for older Windows versions (Vista, XP, 2000), previous macOS releases, and mobile platforms like Windows Mobile and BlackBerry.

User experience improvements distinguish PGP's offering from native encryption tools like Windows BitLocker. A notable addition is the password recovery feature through security questions, providing users with a safety net when credentials are forgotten.

On the server side, PGP Corporation announced two major products scheduled for March 3 release: PGP Universal Server 3 and PGP Key Management Server 3. These server solutions can operate independently or integrate with the desktop software, offering centralized encryption management capabilities.

The Universal Server 3 introduces offline policy management and compliance-focused features, including document signing capabilities for regulatory requirements. Meanwhile, the Key Management Server provides centralized administration for multiple encryption technologies beyond PGP, supporting KMIP, OPAL, IEEE 1619.3, PKCS 11, and security certificates for various network services.

This server development strategy aligns with PGP Corporation's recent acquisition of TC Trust Center and Chosen Security, specialists in Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) encryption. Despite historical perceptions of PGP and PKI as competing approaches, the company positions them as complementary technologies serving different trust models - peer-to-peer for PGP versus hierarchical infrastructure for PKI.

While PGP's server products primarily target large enterprises, smaller businesses can access comprehensive encryption services through cloud-based offerings from PGP partners or directly from TC Trust Center.

The original PGP technology, created in 1991 as freeware for bulletin boards, was acquired by PGP Corporation from Network Associates in 2002, continuing its evolution from popular freeware to enterprise-grade security solution.
